DIY: Shoe Re-vamp

This shoe re-vamp was another case of me contemplating getting rid of a very old pair of shoes. Instead of putting them in the Goodwill bin I decided to give them a little spring makeover. As mentioned here, all things mint have been on my mind. So, there was really no hesitation when choosing a main color. Here's a little breakdown of the process...

{satin finish craft paint, masking tape, 2 pyramid studs, needle nose pliers, small paint brush}

{I painted the studs with Martha Stewart's Satin finish craft paint in Geranium}

{used masking tape to protect the shoes then painted 3 coats of Martha's Satin finish in Seafoam}

{once dry poked through the studs and used pliers to secure}

End result: A brand new pair of spring shoes!

Chia Energy Bites

This recipe is no bake and no fuss. It is super quick to make and gives you instant energy. I made some changes to the original mix by omitting the chocolate chips and adding two tablespoons of chia seeds instead. Lately, I have been adding chia to almost everything. These tiny seeds pack some serious nutritional punch. They are rich in Omega 3s, antioxidants, calcium, and fiber. Best of all they may contribute to weight loss. Happy Monday! Had another great weekend surrounded by family and friends. Friday we celebrated Cesi's (my sister-in-law) birthday. Saturday we had dinner with friends and yesterday we watched the Superbowl at my mom's house. Again, I'm not that into football, but that game was incredible! Such a great win for the Giants. Chocolate Chocolate Chip Zucchini Cupcakes

I made these for our preggo friend who invited us to dinner the other night. She requested chocolate cupcakes and of course I had to give her what she wanted. All that you need is a box of devil's food cake, a cup of shredded zucchini and a cup of semi-sweet chocolate chips. Follow the directions on the cake mix, but add slightly less oil than you normally would. Once all is properly mixed, stir in the zucchini and chocolate chips. Bake according to the directions on the box. I used this vanilla buttercream recipe, it doesn't compare to store bought icing and makes such a difference. What you are left with is a cupcake that is super moist, lower in fat and higher in fiber. I may or may not have eaten at least 5 over the weekend ; )

Salted Pistachio Lassi

The other night my sister-in-law, Mari and I took our first hot yoga class. The experience was traumatizing yet completely invigorating when all was said and done. I am actually going back for another session tonight. Anyway, the point of my story is that when I got home I didn't really want to eat anything too hearty. I decided to do a take on this salty/sweet lassi. This high protein, low fat smoothie definitely hit the spot. Here's my version...
1 cup Greek yogurt
1/4 cup almond milk
1/2 teaspoon freshly grated ginger
2 tsp agave nectar
1/4 cup roasted and salted pistachios
Place the pistachios in a food processor and pulse until the are fairly fine. Remove about two teaspoons of the pistachios and set aside.
Add the remaining ingredients to the food processor and blend until well-combined.
Serve over ice, if desired and top with the reserved pistachios.
Makes two servings

DIY: Microbead Nails

This was the result of me toying around with the idea of creating a studded effect on my nails with the use of microbeads. Pretty simple and definitely eye catching. All you need is nail polish in the color of your choice, microbeads (I bought mine at Michael's), an orange stick, and some clear polish.

Step 1: Paint your nails with two coats of polish. Finish off with clear topcoat

Step 2: Dip the pointed end of the orange stick into the clear polish.

Step 3: Dip orange stick into the beads.

Step 4: Place beads in random patterns onto your nails.

Step 5: Add a final layer of topcoat and let dry.

New Year, New Skin

I have a few New Year's resolutions. One of them is to take better care of my skin. This year I vow to...

1. Remove my make up at night -always. Even if I am dead tired I will use one of these pre-moistened cloths to remove any trace of makeup. I find Ponds cold cream perfect for removing eye makeup.
2. Moisturize at night with coconut oil. The winter is especially harsh on my skin and I find this natural moisturizer gives me a nice glow without clogging my pores. Best of all it smells amazing!
3. Wash my pillow cases once a week. I think this one small change will make a huge difference in my skin.
4.Drink lots of water. So hard sometimes, but with all the detoxifying benefits it so worth it.
5. I alway use a moisturizer with SPF before going outside, but I want to start paying more attention to the hands, neck, and chest. Ladies, it's all about prevention. Don't forget to take care of these areas as they can age prematurely.

Cubanos with Chipotle Mayo

What happens when you are in charge of making the pernil (roasted pork shoulder) for your family's New Year's Eve party and you have massive leftovers the following day? You make Cuban sandwiches, duh! The addition of chipotle mayo was inspired by one of my favorite spots in NYC, Cafe Habana.

Step 1: Blend 2 chipotles in adobo with a 1/2 cup of mayo

Step 2: Assemble your Cubano: Chipotle mayo on both sides of the bread, a generous helping of roasted pork, a few slices of ham, Swiss cheese, and last, but not least the pickle.

Step 3: Press on a panini press or in my case a good old George Foreman grill until cheese is melted.

Chris and I enjoyed these while watching the Twilight Zone marathon. The perfect hangover cure.

2nd Annual Sugar Cookie Decorating Sunday

This Sunday was our 2nd annual sugar cookie decorating soiree, or as I called it Sugar Cookiepalooza. This year we were way more prepared. Instead of relying on a pre-made kit I made both the sugar cookie dough and royal icing from scratch. We also had plenty of tools to let our creative juices flow. I think it's safe to say we have improved greatly from last year.

They can be described as the best Cheez-it you have ever had in your life. Kind of addictive. We added some paillette garland from West Elm, a few mini cans of spray paint, and the literal "star" of the show, the shield from Christian's Voltron figure as the tree topper. DIY: Glitter Shoes

This is how I saved a pair of old shoes from being sent to the Salvation Army. I gave them a simple, little holiday makeover. All you need for this DIY is

- fine glitter in the color(s) of your choice

- Mod Podge with a glossy finish or white glue

- a small paint brush

- a small disposable cup or bowl

Here's how you do it...

In an effort to support Small Business Saturday this past weekend my mom and I went out for some Thai food at Topaz. Everything was AMAZING. We started off with the Topaz salad which consisted of romaine lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, Granny Smith apples, cashews, and a delicious lime peanut dressing. Next were the crispy shrimp dumplings with sweet chili dipping sauce. For our main course we had a crispy tilapia in a brown sauce with veggies that came with shrimp tempura and jasmine rice. Dessert was black sesame mochi. This was a spectacular dinner experience and I highly recommend it.

This is the perfect Thanksgiving cocktail. The blend of pureed pumpkin, cinnamon, and vanilla is literally like drinking a glass of pumpkin pie. For the full recipe and directions click here.

I made the following substitutions

Used just cinnamon instead of pumpkin pie spice
made a shortbread cookie rimmer instead of sugar and pumpkin pie spice to give it that "crust" effect
Used regular vodka.

Cornbread Stuffing & Mac and Cheese: A Thanksgiving Tradition

Every Thanksgiving I am in charge of making the cornbread stuffing and mac & cheese for the gathering at my mom's house. This is tradition and non-negotiable. These accompaniments are expected at the table every year. This year I am changing things up just a bit. I am swapping sausage for bacon in the cornbread stuffing as seen here and using a new recipe for the macaroni and cheese. No, worries I have tested it and it is the BEST I have ever made. Are there any dishes you are in charge of making/expected to make for Thanksgiving?

Stuffed Peppers

My father gave me a huge amount of assorted peppers from Holland. I had no idea what to make until I came across this recipe. I made three changes to the original. I used ground turkey instead of beef, arugula instead of spinach and the best one...I charred the peppers on the stove top before stuffing them. This made for a smokier tasting dish. Making these for a dinner party will surely leave your guests impressed.

Chocolate Dipped Pretzels & Marshmallows

I'm currently working on the sweets table for my niece's birthday party this coming weekend. These chocolate dipped goodies are the perfect addition and they do not even require an oven. Simply melt some chocolate (I used pink and green), dip your pretzels and marshmallows and decorate with sprinkles. Presentation is everything, but it doesn't mean you have to go nuts to achieve it.

Angels on Bare Skin

I usually do not have troublesome skin, but lately I don't know if it's stress or what, I have been breaking out, BAD. I tried using Proactive, but that stuff just made my skin way worse. I was at my wit's end until I heard about Angels on Bare Skin by Lush. I figured my skin couldn't get any worse so I might as well give it a try. I cannot tell you how happy I am about that decision. I purchased and began using it on Friday and in only 4 days my skin feels super smooth and the redness is fading away. It is a clay based cleanser so you take a small piece and mix with a little water and massage it in. It has ground almonds and rice that act as gentle exfoliators. I also purchased the Fresh Farmacy cleanser at the advice of the extremely helpful sales girl. I use this every other day. So, one day I'll use Angels and one day I'll use Fresh Farmacy. The scents are so fresh and clean too. I definitely reccomend these to anyone, troublesome skin or not.

Classic Red Nails With "Gold Leaf" Effect

{supplies: Rimmel's Base Coat/Top Coat Pro, Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure in Right Said Red, Martha Stewart Yellow Gold glitter}

I am a huge fan of the classic red nail. Now with the holidays around the corner (I can't believe it either), it is the perfect time to start experimenting with more festive looks. Nail polish/nail art is an extension of your outfit and should not be forgotten. This quick nail DIY gives the illusion of gold-leaf by the use of glitter, which can add a bit of sparkle to any plain nail polish.

{when polish dries apply a small amount of top coat to the top portion of the ring fingers}

{sprinkle nails with glitter- shake off excess; then apply top coat to all nails}

{end result: gold leaf effect}

Salted Brown Butter Popcorn Treats

This recipe is a take on the classic Rice Crispie treat. By browning the butter you get a rich, nutty flavor. The addition of fleur de sel just takes it over the top. Instead of using Rice Crispies I decided to go with popcorn. The result was a sweet, salty, sticky delicious snack. Perfect for enjoying while watching our new scary obsession, American Horror Story.

DIY: Native American Headdress

I am not one for spending a lot, if any money on Halloween costumes. I usually go through my wardrobe and figure out what I can put together. This year I concocted a Native American get up using the contents of my closet with the exception of the headdress. For this I took the DIY approach.

You can use whatever materials you would like, but these are what I used:

- Assorted colored feathers

- A strip of suede

- 7/8" black grossgrain ribbon

- turquoise beads

- gold glitter puff paint

- glue gun

-scissors

Take the strip of suede, fold in half and make small snips about 1/2" away from each end.

Loop through enough ribbon to be able to secure the band around your head.

Decide where you want to place the feathers.

Hot glue to the back of the suede.

I hot glued a peacock feather and turquoise beads to the front.

I filled the bead holes with some glittery gold puff paint.

Ta da! The end product. I will show you pictures of how it looked on next week ; )

I can't believe today is our 5th wedding anniversary! Time has gone by so quickly, it's kind of crazy. Tonight we are actually attending another wedding. Chris' cousin Jorge and his lovely fiancé Lorena are tying the knot. It's pretty awesome that we get to relive our day through them. Happy Anniversary, my love. I've heard nothing but good things about L'Oreal's Elnett hairspray, but I was a little apprehensive about spending $13 on hairspray. When it comes to beauty products I'd much rather take the bargain route. I finally broke down and bought it and I LOVE IT!!! Seriously, the best stuff ever. It keeps the hold without being super sticking and making you look like a helmet head.

I had a set of these large velcro rollers by Goody back in the day. Now that my hair is getting longer I can actually use them again. They are excellent for creating volume.

I am crazy about this foundation brush by Posh. Unlike many others it doesn't leave a streaky finish, blends very nicely and leaves you with flawless coverage.

This Super Skinny Marker by NYX is currently my favorite liquid liner. You can create an ultra thin line or keep building upon it to create a sexy cat eye. It's super easy to use.

Cover Girl's Hot Passion lipstick with a touch of Revlon's Fire lipgloss on the center of the lower lip. Perfect colors for a classic red pout.

Puff Paint Peacock Pin

You may have seen this peacock brooch in its original state here. I was organizing my craft box and came across some puff paint. My creative wheels started turning so I decided to revamp my pin. This brooch was originally a sample. The stones were never set. All I did was fill in the little holes with different shades of paint and voilà there you have it!
